Schengen Visa Photo Requirements: Size and Rules for 2026
The Schengen Area includes 29 European countries with a unified visa policy. While each country handles its own applications, the photo requirements are standardized based on ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Annex D.
1. Unified Size Standard
All Schengen countries require a 35x45mm photo. The photo should not be older than 6 months. It must be printed on high-quality paper with a high resolution (at least 300 DPI if scanned).
2. The 70-80% Rule
Your head must occupy between 70% and 80% of the total photo height. This means the head (from chin to top of hair) should be between 32mm and 36mm. The photo must show a close-up of your head and the top of your shoulders.
3. Lighting and Focus
The photo must be in sharp focus, clear, and with no ink marks or creases. Lighting must be neutral with no shadows or reflections on the face. Red-eye is strictly prohibited.
